What is it Like for Different Groups to Exist in a Society that is Predominantly White
The racial diversity in the world is tough nowadays, though it is much better than it was in the past. The racial discrimination mostly affects African Americans and Latinos while the vast majority of people tend to be white. The essay is going to discuss the White Privilege and provide assessment in terms of racism.
The understanding of the term “White Privilege” goes deeper to understanding the basics of power and position in society. Most people do not recognize they have any privileges. The best example to illustrate this phenomenon is either men or women, who do not recognize the power of gender; the same happens with the position of the “White Privilege”. In other words, people do not recognize they are white and have various advantages over the African Americans and Latinos. Hence, there are also advantages of both men and women, although most of the people do not value them.
According to Ms. McIntosh, “In case people learn to recognize the power of the opposite gender, they will learn to recognize the power of race”. This statement explains the means of accepting the position that the vast majority of white people use their privileges without knowing about them. However, there are exceptions; otherwise, this contemplation about the race and its power over others would not even exist (McIntosh, 1989, p. 1).
Today, “most of the privileges of African American or Latinos are condemned”. Most of them could not afford to have the basic things exactly as they expected them to be. The examples are numerous, including the “board and loading, as well as religion, ethics, geographical aspects”, etc. (Schaefer, 2011, p. 48).
Other aspects relate to the learning assessment in terms of racism for the multicultural education. Based on the evidence of such racial interactions, there are similarities in these groups, including the difference in experiences, customer and attributes. For all of them, there is a well-known principle called 80-20 rule or the law of Pareto, which addresses the fact:“The vast majority of African American or Latinos lack privileges from the position of the white population” (Heinze & DeCandia, 2011, p. 2).
In fact, there is one concern about the future of racial discrimination from the position of predominant white people. On the one hand, it is almost impossible to predict the situation in the future neither for the United States of America, nor for the rest of the world. On the other hand, according to various researches and the continues studies of racial discrimination as well as multicultural learning activities, the fact of race and its discrimination could change after a decade of constant educational race practices. One of the most challenging facts that could help contribute to the overall situation of racism in the world and the United States is the US President,BarackObama, who is an African American; this fact might change the approach to racial discrimination in the end. The thing is to address the importance of multicultural education by means of influencing the perception of white people towards the discriminated ones in the most favorable terms. Besides, the only way to change the position of racial discrimination is to start from people themselves. In case every single person on the planet starts thinking positive about the racial aspects, the life would become better for both white populations and others. In addition, there should be more examples to illustrate a better approach to racial discrimination in public.
